I'd like to see universities give all students (not just engineers) access to a campus "cloud" hosting service. Also called virtualization, the idea is a cluster of servers can run many different virtual servers. So a couple of big servers can act like hundreds of little ones. Nothing substitutes for hands on experience in IT and web development. This "server playground" would be the perfect place for students of technology and business to cut there teeth on real world IT and web development with out the massive costs of doing it themselves or or the risks of working on mission critical systems. The advantages to the University include added value to the student experience and the ability to gauge the students desire to really play with technology. If you get a user who is really heavily utilizing the service I'd recommend the university IT ask the student for their resume. The students who play with this technology in their spare time are exactly who I'd want to hire. This can also be seen as a way to utilize systems that would otherwise be nearly idle in off hours. Of course there would be limits. If someone thinks it's smart to use the system for financial gain (a.k.a. SPAM) they would be warned or simply blocked from the service. When the student graduates they could easily take a snap shot of there virtual server and move it over to a reasonably priced commercial service like Amazon's, Microsoft's, or Oracle's cloud hosting. I know universities often give a few megabytes of static (no PHP or .Net) website space to students but this would be a massive step up for the aspiring techies amongst the students.
